Kishibashi is one of my favorite artists right now. Watched him perform at the American Music Hall this Winter and was floored by the comprehensive manner in which he looped and mixed live sounds. Giorgio Moroder is one of my heroes too.  They made a song for the movie Metropolis called "Love Kills."  The 12" that I play needed a reworking for my DJ sets so here is what I came up with. In 1984, I saw Queen live in South Africa in Sun City.  Queen got a bad rap for playing in Apartheid era South Africa.  Sanctions and world opinion made it politically incorrect to have anything to do with us.   The band responded to the critics by stating that they were playing music for fans in the country, and they also stressed that the concerts were played before integrated audiences. I was 16 at the time, and together with friends took a bus from Johannesburg to Sun City to see the concert. It was mind-blowing.  Not many acts made it to South Africa, so this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.  After the show, a couple of my friends were arrested for underage gambling and were taken to a holding pen beneath the concert arena.  We scrambled to find them and the waited around while the authorities scared the shit out of them (and me too) with threats.  In a next door cell, you could hear a man getting the shit beat out of him. All they did with us was call my pal Damon's mom to relate our shenanigans.  Then they escorted us to the return bus telling us that we were not welcome back to Sun City. Everybody is a DJ these days. But behind the DJ, there is often a very talented musician who spent endless hours in bedroom, basement or professional recording studios crafting a sound of their own. If they're not crafting a sound of there own, then they're playing other people's music, which is OK too, but lets not forget the producers who made those songs that made the DJ. When I started In My Boom last year, it was my intention to highlight new San Francisco dance music. Long gone are the days of walking into the local record store and asking the guy behind the counter, "Hey, what's new from San Francisco?" Struggling for a resource to find new local sounds and producers, I started a radio show featuring guest 60 minute mixes where the producer gets to present his/her sound. So here is a list with links to some of my guests from the last year. Please check out their music and, if you're feeling it, get in touch with them and tell them. From Hawke's 'Pacific Coastal Highway" released in 1993 to "Glow of Love/Flower's Blooming" which will be released in 2013. Also some rare remixes and other unreleased songs. "Glow of Love/Flower's Blooming" is one of the new songs produced by Robbie Hardkiss and myself. We've been working on a new album with the working title "1991" for the last two years.
