That two headed camel!! I loved the way that CD cover looked when we were designing it in 1996. This DJ mix came out of nowhere with its fresh take on breakbeats, adding a trippy ethnic perspective with rare global tracks mixed with the fresh sounds of new-comers Fatboy Slim and Soulstice. Breakbeats was a new genre about to break out in full force, and this CD was a harbinger of things to come.
After selling 10,000 copies of the CD, we received a charge of seven copywrite infringements for using the camel without permission, and Hardkiss Music was forced to stop selling the CD. The images had been scanned from Rick Smolan’s book From Alice To Ocean, and he and his lawyer were not pleased. I thought it ironic that in years of sampling the likes of The Smiths, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, ELO, The Kinks and many other sources, we had never got into any legal mess. It was the damn camels!!
The release of this CD was a pivotal moment in my DJ career. I began to be hired as a headline DJ performing a thick sound of funky breaks. I still have an appetite for these sounds but continue to be fascinated by the newest permutations and mutant combinations of sounds and recording techniques.
What I like about this CD is the tempo. A house/disco tempo with a funky rhthym, that at the time, did more for me than the four on the floor that almost every other DJ was hammering.

i love this like no other.
i was a student in a small college town in 1996 when i experienced my first rave in a little coffee shop. house music was new to me and unlike anything i had ever heard before. having to own some myself, i walked into a record store the next day and walked out with ‘weekend’. to this day, it remains the best set i’ve ever heard. from the opening haunting sounds of ‘hooligan food’, to the tempo change at ‘kupuri’, the warbly bass lines that kick in at ‘just get up and dance’, to the sirens of ‘santa cruz’, this set is truly a journey.
it was nice to read this cd was pivotal for you, as i have always considered ‘weekend’ the beginning of everything that i love about music now. thank you.
