It was an honor to remix Fila Brazilia. The chill soundtrack to the 1990s was packed full of tracks by Fila Brazilia and their Pork Recording cohorts. We used to relish receiving promos of all the new Pork releases, and sometimes the output of the label was overwhelming. The smokey socialist sounds of Hull was well appreciated in these parts.
One of the highlights of the 2001 Sunburn Sticky Trumpet’s Tour was the road trip to the port of Hull to DJ with Porkie, head honcho of Pork Recordings, at The Lamp. Hull has seen better times. With unemployment at it’s peak due largely to the town losing it’s entire ship building industry 10 years earlier, there was a strange and dangerous lurking mood.
30 minutes into my set, The Lamp erupted into a bar brawl like nothing I’d seen before. Everyone was throwing punches, bar stools were being thrown across the room and the shelves holding the booze behind the bar collapsed. I had no idea who started the brawl or which side anyone was on. When the cops arrived, they were chased out and the fighting resumed, until reinforcements arrived.
Perhaps just another Saturday night in Hull!

A very unusual occurrence for the Lamp. It was never known for trouble only for playing trouble funk. I was there on this occasion and it was unprecendented . I heard later that some of this gang were done for murder. Anyway the Lamp has now ceased in June 2012. A sad day for the Kingstown upon Hull!
